In todays ever disappearing digital timeline, why a portrait matters...When we take photographs nowadays of our loved ones or family, what happens to them?
Do they go into treasured family albums? For everyone to look at in the future? When children grow up they want to see what they looked like as a child. They have this need, we all do
Now, more and more, our photos and precious moments are uploaded onto giant servers in the ether often never to be seen again. Most of us know about Google albums where most of our photos are uploaded, or about the legions of photo folders on our computers where sometimes very precious moments get lost purely because the ease of taking images on our phones has changed the way we capture things.
In todays digital age we no longer treasure family photos as we used to, because, often, they don't actually exist.
A portrait, on the other hand, lasts forever and is real. It is a tangible thing, with a life of its own, that you live with and look at on a daily basis, its a physical object that gives you great pleasure.
A painted portrait by Furr is likely, in fact, to become a family heirloom. A portrait isn't just a photograph, however small, it's a personal interpretation of you and your loved ones by the artist. It's there to capture the essence of a person, in a totally unique way. Queen Elizabeth II chose chose Furr to paint her portrait in 1995.
Firstly Christian always like to meet you for a chat over a coffee - at your convenience - or at his studio in Richmond upon Thames. For the artist, It is good to meet the subject - or the person who is commissioning the portrait - before he embarks. For various reasons - to know what you like and what your tastes are and to also find out about you as a person before embarking on the project. After all you are commissioning a piece of Art that will become a family heirloom or an investment for your organisation. Hopefully you will have chosen Furr because you like his style of work and understand his Art background and experience but you now need some reassurance - This is not an everyday experience - it is a unique one - and you need to know that you are choosing the right artist for your portrait. To be assured that you are putting your faith in someone you can trust. That's why it is good to meet the artist for you also.
You may have been thinking about having a portrait painted for some time - or it could be a thoughtful last minute gift - either of your partner, yourself or of your children, your family, or organisation. Furr says 'I aim for psychological truth in my work. I believe that once you have placed your trust in me to produce a portrait for you, you will be, at the least, extremely satisfied with the result. If necessary I can supply you with referrals from previous clients that attest to this'.
'My process is simple. The sitting can be carried out according to the subject in different locations. At your home, place of work or at several London locations. There is one photographic sitting using several cameras that takes a couple of hours maximum. From these images, in the studio, I decide one or two options that will work as a painting for you. The portrait process for me is often a collaboration of sorts. '
'Once I have selected something that works as a painting I will send a thumbnail sketch for approval. This is mainly to show overall composition and colours of the piece. Once this is approved by you I progress with making the painting.'
'Before sketch approval I will give you a contract outlining the last date that the work will be complete by, depending on my waiting list and your needs. There is deposit payable on signing of the contract. I will be guiding you step by step throughout the whole process so all you have to do is relax and look forward to enjoy the unveiling when that happens.'
'When my work is complete you get to see the final result. This can be an exciting time after the months of expectation. All will be revealed at the unveiling either at my exclusive Arts club, your home or a restaurant of choice or an historic art studio on the Embankment.'
'I am happy to advise and suggest recommended framers and oversee the process. After all the right frame can enhance the work and bring out the best in your portrait.'
Your painting will be fully insured whilst at Furr's studio and up until it is delivered to you after this Christian is happy to advise on arranging insurance for your work and will provide a valuation for your own insurance purposes on request using a well known Art Valuer.
We may contact you a year after portraits completion to see how you are getting on with your painting in situ. Sometimes paintings value may go up with my current market and we can advise on any alteration that might need to take place with your insurance renewal policy. Also with wear and tear your work might get slightly scuffed etc and I am happy to come and restore for a small set fee we can also use this opportunity to go through any queries you might have about the work in general.
'I hope I have explained to you all you need to know about my process and look forward to creating your personal portrait.'
